Conventions to write Diary Entries/ Journal Entries


-          It is a PERSONAL form -          They usually adopt an INFORMAL register


      of writing


-          LOCATION IN TIME
Write the date at the top of each entry
Month: June 2016
Day: Monday 16th
Day and Month: June 16th

-          SALUTATION
                                                         DATE
Dear Diary,
          Kitty,
Sorry I didn´t write last night! It was such a … day, and I was too tired to write anything..

-          Use 1st person singular narration. Make reference to your (changing) emotions, thoughts, ideas, events.

-          Use different paragraphs (not compulsory)


-          You may address different addressees: the diary, the person you are talking about, yourself..

-          Use CAPITAL LETTERS  to show emotions of anger or excitement.


-          Express REFLECTION through self-questioning

-          Use a variety of sentence-type(short, long, statements, exclamations, questions, imperatives) and punctuation

-          Use DIRECT AND INDIRECT SPEECH

-          CHRONOLOGY: Start with events that happened early in the day and end with those that took place in the evening.

-          Use CONTRACTIONS, PHRASAL VERBS, SLANG (Don´t use abusive language),ONOMATOPAEIA (Wow/ Uggh!),  ACRONYMS (LOL (Laugh Out Loud)/ Don´t use those that include an insult)

-          Give DETAILED INFORMATION about places, objects, people, events

-          SHARED INFORMATION with the diary

-          Use SPOKEN LANGUAGE (Oh, well/  Sure )

-          Closing sentences (I´ll see what happens. I have to get some Maths homework  done now!
